Appellate Litigation Seminar

Course Description
Students must also attend a weekly two-hour seminar for the Appellate Litigation Clinic. Students will be assigned readings on the procedural aspects of appellate litigation, preparing the appellate brief, and presenting oral arguments. Students will also be assigned noteworthy cases and other readings on topics related to the appeals they are handling, including immigration law, habeas corpus litigation, constitutional law, mortgage foreclosures, landlord tenant law, parental rights, and prisoners’ civil rights. Guest speakers, including local appellate practitioners, judges, and law clerks, will be invited to address the seminar up to two times per semester.

Additional Time Requirements
Students will receive 4 credits (2 seminar credits graded and 2 clinic credits on pass/fail basis). To earn clinic credits, students must spend 8-10 hours per week working on their assigned appeal and must keep a detailed log of their time and activity. Time logs will be due no later than Monday 5 pm for the preceding week. To earn seminar credits, students must attend a weekly two-hour seminar and complete all assignments for that course, which will include the submission of bi-weekly journal entries in which students respond to specific prompts designed to elicit their reflections on the clinical training they are receiving as well as on the work they are performing.
