Course Description
The goal of this course is to focus on the many ways that law and legal regimes interact with race and ethnicity in the United States. The course is structured to encourage broad and diverse thinking about the nexus of race and law in a variety of legal fields. In addition to covering the broad legal background pertaining to legal regimes that have been applied to various ethnic groups in the United States, the course will cover the contemporary interaction of law and race with respect to a variety of matters, including: voting, education, social equality, employment, affirmative action, freedom of expression, crime, and economic opportunity. The class specifically welcomes all ideologies and viewpoints, and the material presented will cover law and legal controversies from across a variety of groups, historical eras, and political perspectives.
