Course Description

The course provides an introduction to the idea, history and theory of human rights. It introduces the major principles, instruments and institutions of international human rights law, and gives an overview of current issues and critical debates in human rights law. We will begin by examining its historical origins, philosophical underpinnings, and legal grounding in public international law. We will then explore the various methods of implementing and enforcing human rights, be it through state or individual accountability. The course will also give a basic overview of complimentary legal regimes, such as international criminal law, transitional justice, and international humanitarian law.
