Course Description
Handling Cases in the Real World” bridges theory to practice. The course is designed to provide students with a practical approach to litigating a civil lawsuit from inception to jury trial. The course begins at the start of a case coming through the door of a law firm and ends at trial.
Students will learn about client interviewing, case investigation, discovery requests, depositions, drafting pleadings, motions in limine, developing themes for trial, direct and cross-examining lay and expert witnesses, opening and closing statements, and utilizing technology in all aspects of litigation. The course will include extensive class participation, including in-class depositions and direct and cross examinations of witnesses, as well as openings and closing statements.
The instructors are among the nation's top civil litigators, and guest faculty include other top litigators and mediators.

Registration Notes
For Spring 2026, students are not required to have JUDO 0461 (Trial Advocacy II) to take this class. Please reach out to kelly.butts@temple.edu for an override exception if you plan to use this course as a priority pick. Otherwise, you may have a registration issue. Open to 2Ls and 3LEs with one semester of ITAP as well as 3Ls or 4LEs who took ITAP or ITA last year.
Pre-Requisites
You must have completed the following courses before enrolling in this course:
- LAW 0460 (Trial Advocacy I ) or LAW 0558 (Introduction to Trial Advocacy)
- LAW 0540 (Evidence)
