LAW 0791: Sheller Center for Social Justice: The Systemic Justice Clinic

Course Description

Students will work on policy advocacy and community education projects that address systemic issues related to the collateral consequences of the criminal legal system. Students may also have the opportunity to provide direct individual client representation. Work will be team-based and undertaken in collaboration with community-based organizations and public interest legal providers. Students will be expected to participate in a weekly team meeting with their faculty supervisor as well as learn about the substantive and procedural law that is applicable to their cases and projects. This clinic will allow students to: identify issues well-positioned for lawyerly interventions; wrestle with complex and dynamic social and legal issues; research and investigate complicated fact scenarios; create client- and community-centered strategies; participate in cooperative advocacy; and develop legal research, writing and oral argumentation skills.

Additional Time Requirements

Applications will be taken for this Internal Clinic. Students will also be automatically enrolled in The Systemic Justice Seminar for 2 credits. NOTE: Students are expected to devout an average of 15-18 hours/week over the semester, inclusive of the team meeting time.
