Course Description
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and policies of federal constitutional law regarding political and civil rights. (The course does not deal directly with the constitutional rights of the accused, which are addressed in courses on Criminal Procedure). Topics include race, gender, and sexual identity discrimination, the rights of non-citizens, voting and elections, freedom of association, freedom of religion, and freedom of expression. In addition, the course exposes students to the role of the Supreme Court of the United States in articulating constitutional protection for individual rights, and to the essentials of constitutional legal discourse.
