LAW 0496:
Legal, Professional and Business Aspects of Law Practice
Fall 2021 • Section 21
• CRN 27666
Course Description
Law school is filled with courses that teach you how to practice the law. This course teaches you how to run a law practice! Whether you plan to hang out your own shingle or aspire to rise to partner ranks in a large firm setting, it is important to learn the reality of modern lawyering before you enter the workforce. More than developing a client base and manage your practice, success requires an understanding and honing of your strengths to better benefit your clients and your firm. This class will cover: the business considerations of starting a practice; leadership development techniques; client management and development; firm management and development; and related ethics (as related to the Rules of Professional Conduct). Classes will include both practical and theoretical application of the topics covered. There will be expert guest speakers; real world examples; and in-class exercises. The final exam requires you to create a business plan for your future firm or department of a firm. Class size will be limited.
