LAW 0804: Education Law
Fall 2022 • Section 21 • CRN 9098

Course Description

This course will survey legal issues affecting children in our nation's elementary and secondary public schools. Topics will include the right to an education (and to a quality education, to the extent that such a right exists); school funding litigation; school choice; curriculum; First Amendment rights; privacy and discipline; and educational equity, especially in relation to race, class, and disability. While we will cover some well-settled areas of law, we will also devote attention to policy questions and ideas for legal reform. The course is asynchronous and online. Students will access the course through Canvas. This is a serial writing course in which students will draft several short assignments. The course will include opportunities for more informal legal writing as part of the weekly discussions and course activities.
