The subject of this course is government regulation of financial institutions, with a particular focus on federal regulation of banking activities and the financial service activities of banks. The course covers the legal structure of the financial services industry (specifically banking), the formation and expansion of banks and financial holding companies, the competition banks face from nonbank competitors, consumer protection, fair lending and fair housing, litigation and enforcement, resolution of problem banks, issues in bank mergers and acquisitions, the role of banks in combatting money laundering and other crimes, agency prosecutions of insiders, and the Dodd-Frank Reform Act. Banking/securities professionals may be invited to present guest lectures to provide additional "real world" perspective on the financial services industry today.
