LAW 0757: Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

Course Description

This clinic will develop students' substantive knowledge of federal civil tax procedure and tax issues related to low-income taxpayers. The first few classes will develop foundational skills for clinic work and later classes to build on that foundation both with lawyering skills and tax knowledge. In the clinic setting, students will represent taxpayers who are under IRS audit, in dispute with the IRS about taxes owed including through litigation in the U.S. Tax Court or district court, or unable to pay outstanding tax liabilities. Clinic activities also include education and outreach to low-income taxpayers and those who speak English as a second language as well as systemic advocacy projects.
