Course Description
This course introduces students to the foundational concepts, institutions, and legal structures of the American legal system. The first part of the course explores the origins and development of the U.S. common law tradition, the organization and function of the courts, and the civil litigation process.
The second part provides an overview of key constitutional principles, including judicial review, separation of powers, and federalism. Time permitting, the course also includes a brief introduction to core concepts in contract and/or tort law.
Throughout the semester, discussions incorporate a comparative perspective, encouraging students to examine how different legal systems address similar issues. This approach helps students gain a comprehensive understanding of the U.S. legal system while appreciating the diversity of global legal traditions.
