Course offerings for are still tentative. The information below is subject to change.

Course Description

During our lifetimes, climate change will reshape the societies and ecosystems in which we live. Some of these transformations are already underway, and quite apparent; others remain uncertain and unknown. This seminar examines the challenges of governing a particular type of socio-ecological system - the city - as the climate continues to change. We will take up the concepts and methods of law and political economy as a way to analyze the rules that structure urban life, reading and discussing classic and contemporary texts that link law, political economy, and ecology. We will then turn to challenges for urban governance, with a particular focus on greater Philadelphia. Throughout, as we work to explain the current conjuncture, we will assess legal reforms that could promote equity and justice by adapting - or fundamentally redesigning - the places where we live.
