Course Description

This writing seminar examines the role of race, racism and bias in constitutional, statutory and policy issues related to families and the child protection system, more aptly called the family policing system. Specifically the course will examine the role of the state in protecting and policing families, the rights and responsibilities of parents and children, and the allocation of power between families and the state. Students will develop tools to engage in critical and intersectional analysis in considering the role of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and disability in the design and application of these laws and legal systems. Students will also investigate the unique role of lawyers within these legal systems, and in advocating for reform and/or abolition of relevant laws and systems. This course is designed to meet the Bias in the Law requirement.
