LAW 9756: Advanced Judicial Clerkship Externship

Course Description

Temple Law School is proud to offer the Advanced Judicial Clerkship Externship Course. Third and fourth year students are given the chance to work for a judge in the First Judicial District of the Court of Common Pleas of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Students will draft orders, research issues, prepare bench memoranda, and observe judicial proceedings. Students must complete a minimum of 8-10 hours a week in chambers.  In addition to chambers hours, the Honorable Chesley Lightsey and the Honorable Natasha Taylor-Smith will conduct a required classroom component focusing on clerking in state trial courts. The seminar meets on 6 assigned Fridays from 9am-11am in the Stout Criminal Justice Center. Students will set their experiential hours with their assigned judge. Placements will be in criminal and civil court.

Additional Time Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 10 hours each week of the semester of experiential work, classroom learning, or out of class assignments, including approximately 8-10 hours a week in chambers. The hours spent in chambers will be scheduled with your assigned judge. Depending on the judge's needs, students may be assigned additional work or be asked to schedule their chambers hours on certain days. Students can work in chambers on Friday morning and Friday afternoon.
